BellSouth and Scientific Games Corporation today announced the two companies are delivering the first-ever state lottery Virtual Private Network (VPN) in the Southeast, to thousands of South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) retailers. The VPN solution connects retailers to the South Carolina Education Lottery's central computer.
Check Point brings out budget VPN (9/4/02)
Check Point unveiled it's new "budget" VPN line, the VPN-1 Net. For around a $1000 for a 5 user license, this doesn't appear to be a budget VPN. It also doesn't come loaded with a firewall like the VPN-1/Firewall-1 package.
Checkpoint builds blocks for small biz (9/3/02)
Check Point Software, which previously provided security software to big customers, is moving downstream into the market for small and remote offices. Checkpoint's new firewall and VPN appliance, the S-box, sells for around $300 and is made for remote offices and home-office customers.
CipherTrust Announces the First e-Mail Specific VPN
CipherTrust, announced today the availability of Mail-VPN, the first e-mail VPN, as part of its IronMail security appliance. Companies can now use IronMail to provide security and privacy for their e-mail messages without having to deploy software on end-user workstations and laptops.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan U.S. Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) Gateway Markets, reveals that this industry generated revenues totaling $658.7 million in 2001. Total revenues for both hardware and software could reach $1.79 billion in 2008.

Infonet, a global communications service company, has implemented a Cisco based MPLS IP VPN solution. Although there is still some controversy over whether MPLS is a scalable solution for delivering higher quality of service to IP VPN, several global providers have already integrated MPLS into their network core.
ISP Internap enters managed VPN service arena (4/3/02)
NWFusion's Denise Pappalardo reports on Internap's new IP VPN service. IP VPN Service starts at $1400/mo and includes some nice performance guarantees such as 100% network availability, 55 msec or less round trip latency and no more than 1% packet loss. With this kind of performance, VoIP and other low latency high availability applications will be possible.
Manageability, Compatibility Top VPN Selection Criteria (8/4/02)
According to an InStat/MDR study of 405 LAN managers, 73.4 percent said that manageability was most important, while 70.6 percent said compatibility with other equipment was critical.

Security: U.S. companies are getting lazy (9/1/02)
A Reuters article on ZDnet discusses the state of computer security at the corporate level. The article outlines the fact that there is a ton of good security technology in existence, but it's not being used. According to the article, companies lost $12.3 billion last year from computer viruses and security breaches. Most companies take an attitude of, "It hasn't happened to us, so why should we care about security." Hmmmm...
SonicWall adds new VPN features (12/4/02)
SonicWall has announced an upgrade to the firmware powering all of its products which will bring users new VPN and bandwidth management features. Version 6.3 will upgrade all current SonicWall devices, and the firmware update is free and is available for download from SonicWall.

Vendor's tout easier VPNs
Tim Greene reports on some new SSL VPN alternatives to IPsec VPNs from Netilla, Neoteris and Netsilica. Although these new SSL solutions can't do everything that an IPsec VPN solution can do, they do have some interesting applications and they are very user and cost friendly.
VPN Market Research: NetScreen named VPN Leader (5/3/02)
Infonetics has ranked NetScreen Technologies number one for VPN appliances supporting 100 tunnels or less for 2001. NetScreen ranked second in the overall VPN hardware market and third in the high-end segment (1,000+ VPN tunnels).

Williams pitching IP VPN (5/3/02)
NWFusion's Denise Pappalardo reports on the new managed VPN service that William's communication is pitching to it's enterprise clients. Based on it's shaky financial situation, it recently said that it is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, I would imagine that clients will look elsewhere for there VPN needs.
In the past large enterprises have had there network infrastructure crippled when their network service provider went belly up. Financial security of network providers has become an increasingly important priority for many enterprise customers.
