what? ---------- Hi everyone, I have a
problem which I hope
someone can help me with.
Firstly, just let me tell
you that I am a complete
novice where networks etc
are concerned, so if you
answer, speak to me as if
I'm a 3 year old
child.... :)
I
have been asked to do
some Excel work for a
company in a different
country. They have given
me a VPN username,
password and site to
connect to. I have
managed to connect quite
easily using Windows
Vista's "Create new
Network Connection". They
use Microsoft VPN. Do I
need to install this
also? and where do I get
it?
The problem
now is.....what do I do
next? How do I see the
files on their server?
They store all their
Excel files on an SQL
server. So do I need to
install SQL server on my
laptop? What type of
questions do I need to
ask their tecchie, in
order to see the right
files (questions that
won't make me look like a
complete a**hole!!).
I really don't
know anything about this
kind of
thing.....
Any
help would be greatly
received...

brief explanation about
VPN.
-- Virtual
Private network.
--When You connect
through the VPN by
entering the user name
and password,the secure
tunnel will be
established from(Let me
call your end as "local
end" and other end called
"remote end") local end
to the remote end.
--So you can access the
systems in the remote end
through VPN.
--In
the given scenario, you
have connected to the
remote end by "creating a
new connection" in Vista.
This option is for VPN
connection and it uses a
protocol called
PPTP(point to point
tunneling protocol,it
Microsoft
propreitry).Also you have
successfully connected to
the remote
end.
--Now try to
access the remote SQL
server,Whereyou will have
access and permission to
access the particular
files and folders.(You
will have a feel like
accessing the computer in
next room, in VPN
distance does not matters
and it is more
secured)There is no need
to install anything in
your system.

what? ---------- Hi L8ians
Thanks
for your response. The
information is really
very helpful. However,
how will I be able to
connect to their SQL
server? Where do I need
to go to be able to see
this? Sorry, as you can
see, I really don't know
anything about this.....

L8ians Member since: 2009-07-07 18:28:36 | posted: 2009-10-21 15:35:55 VPN ---------- Hi As i understand
you wanted to work on SQL
server from Local
end(your end)?
For
this, no need install SQL
server in your
computer.
Just
call the tech guys in
Remote end(Other end) and
Ask for the Ip address of
SQL server.I just wanted
to know only one
information from you,
will you be able to
access the computer in
Remote end(other
end)?

M1N3773 Member since: 2009-10-21 04:39:21 | posted: 2009-10-21 15:48:07 VPN ---------- Thanks, I will do that
tomorrow. When I have the
IP address, what do I
need to do then?
When you ask
"will you be able to
access the computer in
Remote end(other end)?",
do you mean their server,
or a specific computer?
Sory again for being so
thick. You are really
helpful and
understanding...

their Local
network?
|
L8ians Member since: 2009-07-07 18:28:36 | posted: 2009-10-21 15:58:51 VPN ---------- Hi When you enter
the user name and
password for VPN
connection, Are you able
access any computer in
their Local network?
If you able to
access it means, then i
can say the connection is
successful in both ends. |
M1N3773 Member since: 2009-10-21 04:39:21 | posted: 2009-10-21 16:16:59 VPN ---------- In that case, no, I
cannot. All I get is that
I've successfully
connected to their VPN.
But there's nothing
else.... |
M1N3773 Member since: 2009-10-21 04:39:21 | posted: 2009-10-22 05:39:15 VPN ---------- I've been given their SQL
server's IP address, and
not knowing what to do
with it, I typed it into
the browser, and it comes
up with an online
"Windows Small Business
Server 2003" document.
Do you know how I
can get to see the shared
drive and the files on
the server please? |
L8ians Member since: 2009-07-07 18:28:36 | posted: 2009-10-22 06:52:52 VPN ---------- Hi Am sorry,
yesterday i was waiting
for your reply.Meanwhile
got engaged with my
work.
Final
question for you, When
you connected to the VPN
successfully, Just check
in your laptop screen ,
Is there any new folders
available or not?
Good that you got
the Ip address of the SQL
server.once i get reply
for above question,I will
get a clear
picture.
Once
again sorry for delayed
reply. |
M1N3773 Member since: 2009-10-21 04:39:21 | posted: 2009-10-22 06:55:42 VPN ---------- Hi, no I checked for
that, and I don't have
anything new... |
L8ians Member since: 2009-07-07 18:28:36 | posted: 2009-10-22 07:39:05 VPN ---------- So You are not able to
access anything in remote
end (other end)other than
got connected with user
name and password for
VPN.
Call the tech
guys and inform them you
have connected through
VPN , But not able to
access the local network
in their end(remote
end).Also inform them you
are not using any third
party VPN software to
connect.
Ask them
to check the settings in
their end. So that you
will have access for the
systems in remote end. |
M1N3773 Member since: 2009-10-21 04:39:21 | posted: 2009-10-22 09:52:23 VPN ---------- OK, thanks will
do.
