Do I have what I need for a VPN?
----------
Do I have what I need for a single user VPN connection to my office?

At the office, we have T1 with a CISCO 2542 router (software version 11.2). NT Domain. The ROUTER is blocking many ports especially ports 135-139.

In the past, from my HOME W2K Pro machine, I simply dialed directly into our NT 4.0 RRAS server.

Now, I have installed a BELLSOUTH ADSL at home. This came with a ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB DSL modem.

Been doing alot of reading, research and I am not sure if I have everything I need for a very simple single user VPN connection from HOME to my Office network or I have to "buy" install something else.

It seems I have everything but a "VPN Server" on my network? Could be just installed W2K Server on one of the office network machines?

Any info would be useful?

My end goal is to be able to setup drive maps like I had before when I was dialing directly. If I'm able to get this VPN, will I have to open the router 135-139 ports?

thanks

Win 2k VPN
----------
Santronics,
You have what it takes! I'd go for the Win2k to Win2k VPN.
Do you need help figuring out how to do that?
We have a good doc from MS.
Go to Guides>Howto>Microsoft>20 00 for a configuration document.

Router Question
----------
Thanks for the info. I think I found the doc you refer this morning. From my reading, for a NT server, I will need to install the PPTP protocol and also add a second NIC. For W2K server, I can avoid the second NIC. Does this sound correct? I ordered W2K Server from Ingram Micro (they claim its one last ones to be sold so they say)

Also, my office router has ports 135-139 blocked. Do you think I will need to open these up? My desired goal is to have MS networking shared drives.

Thanks a million.

Win2k vpn
----------
Santronics,
Try and setup the VPN without opening those ports, it isn't a typical problem.
Last copy, right....
Win2k server is not a low supply product. Keep us updated on how the install goes.

cheers,

One last question
----------
Thank Phildom. One last question (more like a confirmation) if you don't mind. The more I read, the more options I seem to have With NT 4.0 Server, I see I can install PPTP protocol. But to do this, I will need a second NIC ethernet adapter on the machine. Is this true? Can I use NT 4.0 Server w/ PPTP without a 2nd NIC? Or do you recommend I continue with the W2K server installation?

Than ks

Win2k VPN solution
----------
Santronics,
From what I've seen, I'd stick with the Win2k VPN solution over the WinNT VPN. The Win2k has built in VPN functionality and it was built to support VPN with IPsec unlike the WinNT VPN which doesn't support IPsec. Also, the Win2k VPN is much easier to configure and the Win2k VPN has more documentation for configuring and for VPN troubleshooting.
