access ---------- I was wanting to connect
two LAN's within two
separate locations via
VPN. We are using Win
98,no servers,firewalls
etc. 7 work stations @
each location (need file
sharing capabilities with
some machines), SDSL
internet access is via
service provider's
routers (Netoupia
7000). Am I
better(cost effective)
off installing a VPN
enabled DSL router @ the
locations for internet
access instead of the
Netoupia's or is there a
some kind of software I
can install on the
workstations to allow
them to access a computer
on the other LAN and use
the Netoupia's? When I
want to access a
particular work station
on the other LAN, what IP
address do put into the
"Host name" area in the
"make a connection tool"
of win 98, the Static
address of the router or
the computer behind the
router that I want to
access. Please reply
with equipment/design
recommendation's (upfront
cash to but equipment is
limited) | phildom Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-03-29 01:00:29 Site to Site VPN ---------- Are you only running
Win98 on the LANs? If
you have a PC on both
ends that can be
designated as a VPN
router than you can look
at a software VPN
solution. If you're
interested, I can get you
a list of VPN software
solutions.

response, yes, Windows 98
@ both ends on all
workstations.Almost
anything is possible but
is it possible to
configure a single
Windows 98 workstation as
a VPN router? If so could
you explain how to do
this? I was under the
impression that Windows
98 could not act as a VPN
server or router for that
matter. If it is
possible, will the single
PC need any internal
upgrades since it will
also be processing
information and acting as
a VPN Router?
| phildom Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-03-29 12:45:29 Site to Site VPN ---------- Win98 can't be used as a
VPN server, however you
can load software onto
one of the computers on
both ends of the network.
There are a few solutions
that involve downloading
software and running it
on your own computer. We
haven't tested these yet.
I might be able to get a
VPN software package free
if you'd be willing to
test it for
us.

looking at the download
solutions but the
interface between the PC
& DSL line how is that
taken care of some kind
on internal
NIC?
What other
options are out there
similar to the one you
have proposed so that i
can learn the theory of
how it works? | phildom Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-03-29 18:56:07 Software VPN Solution ---------- I'll ask the companies
for details and relay
them to
you. Basically, I
think the software is
downloaded and it turns
one of your PCs into a
VPN router. I'm not sure
if the PC is still
usable, that will be an
interesting
question!
-Phil | nextgen Member since: 2002-03-27 17:50:39 | posted: 2002-03-29 22:33:37 Phil ---------- No doubt! Sounds like a
plan! And again Thanks
phil for all your help up
to this point...I'll be
awaiting a response. |
