SMC7004FW router
installed and was able to
make VPN connections
with router configured as
a PPTP server. I was able
to browse all
computers On The remote
domain and was able to
remote desktop
with certain computers
on the remote LAN. This
worked great except for
the router needing to
be re-booted because it
would freeze from time to
time. Router had
latest firmware.
Second problem:
Installed new netgear
router that allows PPTP
passthrough and
enabled remote
connections on my works
XP Pro PC. I am able to
make a VPN connection
with this PC but can only
see this PC and I can
only remote desktop
with this PC. I Can Not
Browse The Remote
LAN... NOTE: I
Would Also Like A
Recommendation For A
Router That Has
PPTP Client/Server
Built In That Is Stable
IF I Can Not Get The
Second
Problem Solved.
THANKS

the router you have, but
I have had a few, the
netgear, endless hassles,
etc.
I settled for
a 3Com 3CR856-95, this is
a great VPN END POINT
router, which means it
wil lact as the VPN
server, most other
firewalls only have VPN
pass thru, which means
you still need a server
on one side and a client.
With the 3Com you are
able to establish a
client connection
directly to the router
via PPTP, IPSEC or
L2TP.
As per you
other question, the
browseing issue, well you
can connect to the
machine of your choice if
you edit the HOST file on
your XP laptop, then use
the UNC path to connect
to the share or server,
that will work. To browse
you will need to make
sure the XP client has
the smae domain NAME as
the server, or if
workgroups, make the NAME
the same of the
workgroup, then it should
browse.
have not
figured out any better
way of doing this
yet....
hope this
helps |
