after a few seconds. ---------- I’ve been using a VPN
connection to the same
remote office for about 5
years now. Have had very
few problems.
But
now, I’m having a problem
where my VPN disconnects
after a few seconds of
connectivity. This
problem seems to be
isolated to one machine,
as I’ve used the exact
same connection
(including user/pass) on
two other machines on the
same hub, in the same
office – as well as two
machines outside of the
office – no problems with
these comps when using
the VPN.
I can’t
think of any ways to
troubleshoot this, and
our network admin only
suggests I reformat my
machine.
Two
events that may or may
not have contributed to
the problem are: 1) I
have uninstalled Sygate’s
free software firewall,
and then
reinstalled. 2) I had
disconnected this machine
from the network,
disabled the ethernet
LAN, and then enabled my
wireless LAN. This was
for a vacation where I
took the laptop with me.
I was unable to get any
VPN connectivity from
this point on, so I think
this may be the real
contributor.
If
anyone has any idea as to
the particular problem
and/or how to fix it, I
would be extremely
grateful!!

running Windows2000, and
the “55 second
disconnect” XP issue
doesn’t seem to be the
problem, but I could be
wrong (there is no Win2k
hotfix). | wiinter Member since: 2004-10-01 13:36:05 | posted: 2004-10-04 13:32:10 Also ---------- We're also connected to a
local domain, and I have
several mapped drives to
the file server. There
are no performance
problems to these drives,
or with all other network
/ internet
access.
I'll relay
the exact order of events
(should address your
firewall question): 1)
VPN to remote location
working. Also, software
firewall is inactive
while i'm behind the
office network. 2)
Uninstalled firewall,
since I wasn't using it
anyway. Did a little
pre-vacation cleanup of
the hard drive.. deleting
emails, etc. 3) Packed
up laptop, took with me
to a location that had
wireless
connectivity. 4)
Disabled my ethernet LAN
and actually also cleared
my IP and DNS settings
(not sure why), enabled
wireless card LAN. 5)
Noticed that I could VPN
into both the remote
location, as well as VPN
back to my office file
server, however, the
connection wouldn't
sustain longer than a few
seconds, sometimes 30-60
seconds, but usually 10
seconds. I deemed this a
problem with being behind
a router on the wireless
network. 6) Got back
to the office, from
vacation, disabled
wireless card LAN,
enabled my ethernet LAN,
and put my exact network
settings back in (IP,
DNS, etc). 7) Noticed
that VPN to remote
location still wouldn't
sustain a connection,
even tho, as far as I can
tell, everything was the
same as when I left on
vacation. 8) Figuring
that it may be related to
me uninstalling my
software firewall, I
decided to reinstall it.
The VPN will connect with
both the firewall on or
off, but it will still
not sustain a connection,
whether on or
off..
So... I'm
all out of ideas. Do you
know of logs, or ways I
could troubleshoot this? |
