XP to XP VPN
----------
I am confused!

I want to set up a VPN from one of my machines to one of my buddy’s machines (so I can do unattended, automatic, offsite backups because I am way too lazy to keep feeding the machine with blank CD’s and driving them somewhere).

Settin g up the client is easy enough (new connections wizards and follow the prompts for a VPN) setting up the server seems easy enough (new connections wizard and follow the prompts for an incoming call). Even the routers do not seem that tough (forwarding the Ipsec and PPTP’s).

The problem is, it does not work. I get an error 800 on the client machine. I get the impression the problem is because I do not have a digital signature to authenticate who I am (found something in a log file complaining about my machine certificate), but it never asked me for one in the connection wizard.

I am also unsure about if I need Ipsec client software. I do not want to do anything complex like remote desktop sharing, I just want to be able to map a network drive in a secure environment. Does the operating system have all the bits I need built in? Or do I need to go hunting for more stuff?

Forgive the sins of a newbee, we were all one once.
