remote client to BEFVP41 help request.
----------
Setup:
Small Office - Win2K Domain with 1 Win2K server and 5 Win2K/XP workstations. Server is also DHCP server for network. This netowrk resides behind BEFVP41 router (running NAT).

Objective:Allow three home systems (all at seperate locations) to connect to office via VPN. Home systems are Win98/2K systems.

BEFVP41 settings:
VPN tab;
One tunnel enabled for testing.
Local Group set to Office subnet/mask
Remote Group set to Any
Remote Gateway set to Any
Encryp = 3DES
Auth = MD5
Key = Auto
PFS is checked and set

Advanced/Filte rs tab;
SPI Disabled
Block WAN Disabled

Test One:
followed diriction found at
http://www.linksys. com/support/support.asp?s pid=86
making the apropriate IP addressing changes. Remote system 678 no answer error. VPN router log show succes but then drops after two or three packets. Checked Microsoft links provided on linksys site
http://support.mi crosoft.com/default.aspx? scid=kb;en-us;q252735
Note - MORE INFORMATION second paragraph first line "Windows 2000 IPSec tunneling is not supported for client remote access VPN use because. . ." so I'll try a diff VPN client.

Test Two:
followed directions found at
http://www.homeneth elp.com/vpn/router-config .asp
downloaded and installed SSH Sentinel v1.3(cool lookin little program). Was unable to connect, error: failed in Phase 1.

Read all messages with ref to BEFVP41 VPN router at vpnlabs.com and groups.google.com

Has someone gotten something like this to work with please let me know. Or should I scrap the BEFVP41 and try a different product? Any help at this point would be VERY welcome.

Thank your for your time.

Another VP41 guy
----------
I am also in the process of setting up a VPN using the VP41 routers.

Not sure I follow your tests (I'm a newbie to VPN's) but I was able to establish a connection between my two offices. However, I cannot see any computers from the other office. The other problem I seem to be having is that since one location uses a dynamic IP, when that changes we lose the connection.

Not sure if our problems are related but perhaps we can help each other out.

forget about it
----------
Hi, I also have the Linksys VPN Router and I can not get it to work either. I have called them 4 or 5 times and every person I have spoke to could not tell me how to make it work. I have tried connecting to it using WinXP VPN client with not luck. Linksys said if you have a VPN router on each end that it will work with no prob.

BEFVP41 to BEFVP41 connection.
----------
Todd: Have you set up your security policies on both ends of the tunnel? I've seen a load of messages of ppl having the same problem as you (being able to set up a tunnel between to routers but not being able to see the systems on ether end). I've also read that you need to change your routing table on your computer to basicaly teach it how to send packets to the other portion of the (virtual) network. This is done using the DOS route command. There is a small snipit of info on how to do this at: http://www.homenethelp.co m/vpn/router-routing.asp. Check this out and let me know if it helps.

Win2K/XP VPN client software.
----------
Talisman: I read on the microsoft.com that Windows does NOT support IPSec VPN connections alone (like the BEFVP41). It does however support L2TP over IPSec which with my limited understanding of it, uses IPSec for the inital connection and then switches to L2TP. You might shop around for a third party VPN client software (if ya find one that works with the BEFVP41, PLEASE let me know). I've tried SSH Sentinel (http://www.ssh.com/produ cts/sentinel/pilot/), but it didn't work for me. Hope this helps.

Worth a try
----------
Dave: Thanks for the suggestion. We'll give it a go and report back on the results.
